SUMMARY:Underwater in Salem Sound: Drifters — Ocean Currents in the Gulf of Maine and STEM Education
DESCRIPTION:** This is a hybrid program which can be attended in person OR online via Zoom. \n Attend in person by registering below. \nAttend online via Zoom by registering HERE \nThis past winter and spring\, Salem Sound Coastwatch’s School to Sea program led a Drifter Program with local students in the Salem Sound community with the help of an awarded MIT Sea Grant. The drifters are low cost and student-built devices that track currents via satellite telemetry. While giving real-time data on currents in the Gulf of Maine that contributes to NOAA’s Integrated Ocean Observing System and validates numerical models\, students are also able to collect and analyze the data for their own education purposes. This program has been running since 2004 and was founded by the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation\, the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC)\, and NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center\, and since then\, more than 1\,500 different drifters have been deployed by about 100 schools! \nRegistration is required. Attendance to join in person is limited to 50 attendants\, or attend online via Zoom. Please register to join IN PERSON BELOW or join via Zoom HERE. If registering for Zoom\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting online. \nAlex Borreil is an Educator for the School to Sea program for Salem Sound Coastwatch and holds a bachelor’s in Environmental Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. In addition to being an educator\, she was also the Principal Investigator for the drifter program. Previous to coming to Salem\, Borreil spent a collective six years leading and creating field and classroom-based marine science courses and research projects for students in the Caribbean and Florida Keys. As a New England Native\, her goal is to inspire young scientists to continue learning and protecting their local coastlines through hands-on educational experiences. \nFor the past fourteen years\, Underwater in Salem Sound has been co-sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch and Abbot Public Library. DESCRIPTION:The rec department will offer free childcare during the 2026 Annual Spring Town Meeting for families attending the meeting at Swampscott High School. \nChildcare will be available for children ages 3 (must be potty trained) and up from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and will be staffed by the Swampscott Recreation Department team. Families should drop children off in the cafeteria\, the program will be held in Room B129\, where children will enjoy a fun\, supervised evening featuring movies\, games\, and crafts. \nThe initial childcare session will take place on Monday\, May 18\, with the possibility of additional sessions on May 19 and May 20 if Town Meeting continues. \nTo help ensure a safe and organized environment\, advance registration is required for all participants. \nWe look forward to helping families participate in this important civic tradition while providing children with a safe and engaging space for the evening.

Author Jennifer Crystal learned the hard way what can happen when you miss a tick bite. Join Crystal as she reads from her memoir\, “One Tick Stopped the Clock\,” explains the signs and symptoms of tick-borne illness\, and gives tips for safely enjoying the outdoors. \nFollowing the reading and talk\, Crystal will answer your questions\, and copies of her book will be on sale. \nBitten by a tick at age 19 but not diagnosed with Lyme and other tick-borne diseases until mid-twenties\, Jennifer Crystal fell from the pinnacle of post-college momentum to the precipice of despair. Sidelined from her dream job as a ski instructor in the Rocky Mountains\, Crystal fought not only for her health but also for validation and support. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Randi Lebar will present an inspirational talk about the wild ride she has taken with her mother\, pianist Elaine Lebar (born in 1928) who went viral on TikTok in 2020 while living in a memory care unit in Buzzards Bay. Specifically focusing on the magic and power of music in dementia\, the talk features many videos of Elaine\, and also includes lessons Randi learned along the way about finding meaning and joy in their relationship\, in spite of her mother’s mental decline. The presentation is sure to entertain a wide audience\, and it will be especially educational and hopeful for those dealing with a loved one in any stage of cognitive decline. \nElaine Lebar began playing piano at the age of 3. She graduated from the High School of Music and Art in NYC\, received a bachelor’s in music from Brooklyn College and a master’s in music education from the University of Missouri. She was an accomplished performer\, accompanist\, educator and composer. While living with dementia\, Lebar became a TikTok star with over 250\,000 followers\, and was featured in both local and national news media. \nRandi Lebar graduated from Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences in 1978 with a bachelor’s in Chemistry and went on to receive a master’s in 1982 from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She then served for 11 years in the United States Navy\, completing her Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Naval Hospital Oakland. After serving as an orthopaedic surgeon in Okinawa\, Japan\, Dr. Lebar left the Navy and moved to Maine where she continued her orthopaedic practice. With staff guiding both spaces\, participants will experience structured activities\, teamwork\, and plenty of fun. After the first hour\, groups will switch so everyone can try both environments. \nThis program offers a well-rounded blend of movement\, creativity\, and social interaction—all in a supportive setting where youth with disabilities can build skills\, make friends\, and have an amazing time.
